Sidesword Training & Practice
w/ Allen Reed
(& tentatively the likes of Mark Gipson, Tim Lyon, Terry Tindill, and that ilk)

What? When? Join us at 10:30am for some sidesword instruction, and open practice until 4pm.  We'll close up the building by 5pm.  This is not an SCA event; you must be 18 to participate actively.

How much? We ask $3 of Scholars of the Arte, and $1 of "widows" and hangers-on, toward covering hall rental.

Where? Mount Morris Coliseum, on the west side of the village square.  Take Rte. 64 west from I-39 (exit #104) about 25 miles into Mount Morris. One block west of The New Stoplight (and so far, the only one such in town) turn left at Seminary, go 2 blocks to Front St., and gaze to your left at the back of the building.  We'll have signs out ....

Mapquest.com thinks it's here, and this time they're right.

Description: Nowhere in Europe has the art of knife fighting been so nurtured as in the countries of the Mediterranean, particularly Spain.  Throughout Spain, one can find training halls where edged-weapons combat is practiced today as it was 300 years ago, as American ninjutsu master James Loreiega discovered when he toured Spain to conduct his own training seminars.
The blade most associated with the Spanish is the navaja -- an elegant, curved folding knife first developed during the 17th century -- which has been carried and used by the rich and the not-so-rich alike.  Navajas crossed the hands and drew the blood of countless people, both in and out of Spain.

A copy of the complete syllabus will be available upon receipt of registration.

Equipment: Wear comfortable workout clothes, gloves, fencing masks.  The instructor will provide trainer navajas.

Class Descriptions, including Necessary Equipment:

Intro to Fiore's Longsword (Adam Velez)
This class focuses on the basic principles of stance, balance, and movement relating to the use of the longsword, as currently interpreted from Liberi's treatise from 1409. The fundamental mechanics of the weapon, guard positions, cuts, and defense will also be covered among the drills and plays presented in the class. A steel, wood, or aluminum longsword simulator will be needed for the class. Gloves and fencing mask are also recommended.

Marozzo Sword & Buckler  (Mark Gipson)
Class will cover the usage of the early 16th-century civilian cut-&-thrust sword along with the one-handed buckler of the time period. Both round Bucklers and "wavy" Square Target shields will be covered. This will be based on the Bolognese Tradition (the Dardi School), particularly from the fencing manuals written by Achille Marozzo
These manuals were designed to instruct people on how to survive duels. While they don’t fully describe a true system of combat you can see that there was a system that they drew from. The sword and buckler sections of Marozzo’s manual are particularly rich in information and detail on how to perform the combat. References are made to both combats to the death and to "play" at swords.
This 2-hour class will cover several guardia and assaults using the Spada da filo (also called the Spada da lato, or Sidesword). Students will learn to deliver percussive cuts in a fashion suitable for swordplay. The students will be required to have fencing jackets, gloves, masks and gorgets. Knee and elbow padding is recommended. The sword needs to be a schlager-style sword at a minimum. Rapier simulators can be used, but length can be an issue. Many people will have some trouble working with a 40-inch-plus sword. There should be some loaner equipment available. If the student provides a buckler, it should be capable of withstanding forceful percussive cuts.

German Rappier from Joachim Meyer  (James Klock)
Meyer's 1570 book includes a significant chapter on the use of the "Rappier," a single-handed civilian weapon used for both cutting and thrusting. This class will focus on the Meyer's instructions for Rappier, and how they relate to German combat in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Equipment needed: Del Tin bated sidesword or rapier, or an equivalent blade, as well as a fencing mask, gorget and heavily padded glove. Shoulder, elbow and knee pads are strongly recommended.

Spanish Rapier (Terry Tindill)
This class will begin with the basics of Spanish Rapier as taught by Maestro Martinez. This will include gripping the sword, stance and basic footwork. We will then progress to a review of the lines of attack and defense used in this style and their relationship to measure and tempo. Time permitting, we will also review several specific attacks, including the use of cuts.
Equipment needed: Rapier, mask and other protective gear.

Swetnam’s Rapier & Dagger (Allen Reed)
Swetnam published his book The Schoole of the Noble and Worthy Science of Defence in 1617. It is the first book in English written by an Englishman which includes teachings on the use of the rapier.
Students taking this class will be introduced to the guards, blade and foot work that Swetnam advocates when using the rapier and dagger.
Equipment needed: Rapier and dagger, mask and other protective gear.
